DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES
TCVM/Anthroposophic Consultation (first visit) (1.5-2.5 hours) $ (a deposit of $ required upon appointment to allocate adequate time allotment)
TCVM: Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine
Anthroposophic Medicine is a form of complementary and integrative medicine that combines conventional medical practices with spiritual and philosophical beliefs)
• Review of pet’s medical records (usually requested at least 48 hours before visit)
• EXPECTATIONS of client
• Shock & Resistance: Clients may feel overwhelmed by the Integrative approach and unfamiliar modalities for treating their pet’s comorbidity, but concerns will be addressed and options provided. Clients always retain the power of choice.
• Clients should be aware that western procedures such as bloodwork, x-rays, or urinalysis may be recommended during the consultation, separate from the TCVM/holistic exam, depending on their individual case and timing of previous tests.
• Western treatments will only be modified with approval from both the client and Dr. Higgins. TCVM will complement existing treatment as part of an integrative approach.
• ACUPUNCTURE has different modalities including:
• Aqua-puncture: injection tiny amounts of sterile liquid such as vitamin B12, saline, Sarapin, Traumeel. Injection of fluids into an acupoint is believed to enhance the De Qi (energy) response to acupuncture.
• Tui-Na (Chinese massage/chiropractic modality over meridians) with or without the use of therapeutic grade Essential Oils.
• Dry Needle – what generally clients think of when they hear “acupuncture.”
• Electro-acupuncture-a small electrical current is added to dry needles that is used especially in IVDD pets to release enhance acupuncture effects releasing endorphins as well as serotonin.
• Laser Acupuncture- using Class 2/3b cold lasers over acupoints especially used in needle-shy patients (Goggles will be used on pets and humans for eye protection)
• Tunic Forks may also be used in conjunction with dry needling or Tui-na
• Moxibustion: using the herb mugwort (Artemesia vulgaris) is burned near/on acupoints to apply gentle heat to the body.
During the initial consultation, Dr. Higgins tests acupuncture techniques to determine which are most effective for each pet, basing the treatment plan on their responses. Her intuitive approach may differ from other practitioners, and she does not replicate others' methods. Please respect this!
• AROMATHERAPY with therapeutic grade essential oils is typically used to reduce anxiety for clients and pets. If you or your pet is sensitive to scents, please inform us before the session.
• SOUND THERAPY using Dr. Jeffrey Thompson’s audio recordings is commonly employed in sessions to support relaxation, nervous system regulation, and overall stress management.
• CHINESE HERBS are generally suggested but are tricky to give to resisting pets. However, these are imperative to treatment plans. Many forms are offered and if all else fails, then alternative treatments will be suggested.
• TCVM NUTRITION: The treatment protocol is typically reviewed during the initial session. Clients may prepare food for their pets, but this is optional. Raw food diets and human-grade kibble are also identified as appropriate alternatives.
